SPIRIT FRUIT

This Sunday I will be starting a new series of messages called ‘Spirit Fruit’ and I am so ready to start preaching them I’m about to explode!

These messages on the Fruit of the Spirit will be GUARAUNTEED to change your way of thinking on how we live our lives as Christians and most likely how alot of us actually view the Fruit of the Spirit and bring to you the knowledge and encouragement you’ll need to start seeing this ‘Spirit Fruit’ begin falling from your ‘branches’ immediately and bring your life to a level in God you never thought possible!

Hope to see you Sunday!

RUN

Well…I just wanted to keep everyone updated on my progress to ‘drop a few’ pounds…to date I have lost 15 lbs over the last 2 1/2 weeks, and I must tell you – I couldn’t be more excited.  Though the journey hasn’t been an easy one as there have been a few temptations and opportunities to slack along the way – I have perservered! :)

What has surprised me the most has been my ability to run more.  I heard someone say (not sure who) that the only way to increase your ability to run is to – simply ‘run’.  I remember when I started running again just 2 1/2 weeks ago and I ran a little over a mile and had to stop about 4 or 5 times – my side was splitting – I wanted to throw up – I couldn’t get enough air – my legs were screaming in pain – it wasn’t fun at all.

Today – I ran nearly 3 miles and I loved every minute of it!  It’s pretty amazing to think how we can condition ourselves to do things we don’t think we can do – if we would just keep trying (I think there’s a lesson in there somewhere – hehe).

Anyways – life is good.

Coldplay Concert – an unforgettable experience!

Friday night I had the opportunity to not only attend the Coldplay concert here in St. Louis – but experience it with Backstage passes!  My niece Madison won a Y98 Radio Contest that enabled my friend Zach and I to go backstage and experience what I think was the best concert I’ve ever attended (after talking to the record label manager – we found out that we were the only two people allowed this ‘backstage’ privilege – AMAZING). Coldplay is in my opinion one of the greatest bands out there today and I’m a HUGE FAN of their music…so experiencing the concert from the best seats in the house of a packed crowd of nearly 15,000 wasn’t too bad at all.  Here are some pics of our night:

EVO

This Sunday, I will wrapping up our “Evolution of the Church” series with a message that I beleive will send you home with quite the smile on your face and alot of encouragement in your heart.

We’ve been talking alot about ‘change’ over the last couple of weeks and how there has been an enormous cultural shift in the American church over the last 100 years – and the church today is virtually unrecognizable as to where we were just 10 short decades ago.  We learned what to focus our eyes on throughout all of this change and how to staple our lives to what really matters as Christians.  We learned that one thing must never change no matter what our culture throws at us – OUR MESSAGE…it cannot be compromised to fit our modern way of thinking….regardless of what change takes place to the method in which we share that message (and the method will always change) – we must never compromise the message of Jesus.

I want to take this Sunday and celebrate this ‘CHANGE’.  I mean really dig down deep into the surface of what we have become as the ‘church’ in today’s world – what we are accomplishing today for Jesus – the lives that are being changed all around the world because of the passion that is burning in the hearts of so many Christians.  If you really look at it – we are doing an incredible job as beleivers in Jesus Christ worldwide – and you will not want to miss it.

In fact – we’ve decided to throw a party this Sunday to celebrate all that we are doing today as Christians – we’re gonna have baloons, streamers, cake, and more…so bring your party hats and join the party this Sunday @ 10am…you’ll be glad you did!

SWEAT.

Well…I just wanted to throw a quick post and let everyone know that I have been proudly ’staying the course’ with my goal for weight-loss and converting towards a healthier style of living with my diet and excercise.

7 Days out and I’m already 11 pounds lighter.  The one thing that I can say I’m doing alot of is – sweating.  I run about 2 miles a day (sometimes a little more) and I’ve found that sweat finds its way out of my body and into my shirt.

Sweat is a very interesting thing that we do.  If you think about – it’s like our skin LEAKS.  What is this stuff?  What purpose does it serve?  Why do we do it?

The answer is pretty cool – it really gives testimony to just how amazing God is and what a GENIOUS He was in creating our complex designed bodies.  This may not interest you like it did me – because after all – it’s sweat for crying out loud – GROSS – but check it out:

UNDERSTANDING SWEAT:

What_is_sweat

Sweat is essential to human survival and serves as the body’s coolant – protecting it from overheating.

There at 2-4 million sweat glands distributed all over our bodies.  The majority of them are ‘eccrine’ sweat glands which are found in large numbers on the soles of feet, the palms, the forehead and cheeks, and armpits.

Eccrine sweat glands secrete an odorless clear fluid that helps the body to control its temperature by promoting heat loss through evaporation.

TO ME, THAT IS AMAZING!!!

The Lincoln County Fair!

I took my family to the Lincoln Fair this week – which if you’re from this area – you know that it’s one of the great events of the year for families and ppl of all ages.

You just gotta love the atmosphere of celebration, music, food, and fun, and not to mention the truck pulls!  We personally spent alot of time at the big slide which my kids absolutely loved to do over and over and over and not to mention playing the carnival games where they won some cool little ’stuffed aliens’.  It was also great connecting with people from Journey Church – we happened to see quite a few people there this week!

An interesting thing that I noticed was when we were leaving, we were obviously stuck in alot of traffic coming out of the fairgrounds road to jump back onto Highway 47 to go home and while we were waiting in traffic, I noticed our Journey Church billboard shining bright right off the highway…and thought wow – what a great opportunity for people to see and hear about the church…I mean literally everyone that is in traffic has an opportunity to hear about us.

So I just wanted to take this blog and say if you’re reading this because you saw our billboard – WELCOME!  We’d love to have you and your whole family  join us this Sunday @ 10am over at Bonfil’s Auditorium, the honor would be ours.  You’ll be glad you did!

RUNNING

Well…here we go.  This blog will be the 1st of many that will log my attempt to drop a few pounds (well…a little more than a few, 50 to be exact)…and I’ll be the very first to admit that I need to.

Losing weight in my mind isn’t some ‘quick diet’ that will allow me to shed 25lbs this month, keep it off for a couple of weeks and then gain it all back after a couple of backyard BBQs with the family (which I can do easily – trust me) – it’s conforming to a lifestyle that consists of one word – DISCIPLINE.

Disciplining myself to make time for exercise – restrict the portions that I give myself when it’s time to eat – and not allow unhealthy foods to take over my eating habits.  This in itself is quite the challenge, not only for me, but for many people and one of the greatest things that I beleive helps us overcome that challenge is – accountability.

I’m so glad to have Zach Piepmeyer here with us visiting from L.A., CA (he’s the one running with me in the photo above).  He was in my youth ministry in Arizona for 4 years and we became great friends and have continued to connect since then.  He will be staying with us for about a  month and I’ve found him to be a very encouraging source of accountability in helping me with my weight loss endeavor…and for that – I’m thankful.

Anyways – I’ll be checking in quite a bit with some updates on my progress and look forward to showing you my ‘Journey’ in this weight loss.

Much love!

Jesse

‘A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz’.  ~Humphrey Bogart

If you’re a baseball fan – then you LOVE the All-Star game.  The one time every year where baseball’s best unite on the field and divide into the leagues they play under and give everyone a great baseball experience.  I don’t watch alot of regular season games, but I do keep up on the Cards quite often…and of course love the All-Star hype.

This year, the All-Star Game lands in St. Louis at Busch Stadium and I just wanted to take this blog and say ‘good luck’ to the 3 Cardinals that were voted into the NL Roster:  Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, & Rich Franklin.

Also, the 25th annual Homerun Derby is getting ready to take the stage tonight and Albert Pujols will hopefully dominate…but we’ll see.

Gotta love baseball.

evolution

I am literally at the ‘edge’ of my seat with excitement about the 3 week series of messages that I will be starting this coming Sunday called ‘The EVOLUTION of the Church’.

When you look back through the last 100 years of American church history, there has been quite a transition that has taken place.  One of the many things that have transitioned has been how the church has reacted to American culture.  If you study church history –  in the early 1900’s it seemed that the church really took alot of pride in adopting a lifestyle that exemplified the very opposite of what many had in mainstream culture – and believed strongly that anything inside of mainstream culture was in fact – SIN.

Some of the things that were considered SIN and strongly shunned by the church in those days were: Bowling, Baseball Games, Playing Cards, Large Corporations, Women in pants, Men in shorts, Rock N Roll music, & Golf just to name a few.  These were all the ‘avenue to a devil’s hell’ according to a popular Protestant minister quoted as saying in 1923.

Today – you see the church IMMERSED in these things and we have embraced them quite frequently, incorporating many of the things listed above at our church events, services, and functions…in other words – we adopted them into our lifestyle.  Today, we have church events at bowling alleys and play Rock-N-Roll music in our services.  We have churches today holding ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ poker tournaments for Missions and I don’t know many preachers who don’t fancy themselves a game of golf every now and then.

How could something that ‘used to be’ SIN – be OK today?  Or was that even SIN at all?  What happened throughout the last 100 years that have caused the church to experience such a dramatic transition?

Over the next 3 weeks I will be explaining this great CULTURAL transition and show you what REALLY MATTERS through all of it.  This week I will starting off in a VERY unique way – trust me, you won’t want to miss it!

July 4th in STL

Wow!  It was so great to celebrate the 4th of July in my hometown!

My family and I (my parents included) dropped in on Fair St. Louis (previously known as the V.P. Fair) yesterday to celebrate America’s 233rd!

The boys were absolutely blown away by their first St. Louis fireworks display as we laid on our blankets on the Arch lawn looking up with tens of thousands of others as fireworks were lighting up the dark sky right in the center of the downtown Arch…it would be tough to beat that view anywhere in America, and we enjoyed every minute of it.

We had some great moments yesterday – from just being with my family to eating some amazing food – from watching the boys play some intense ‘air guitar’  to the band Train’s version of Aerosmith’s ‘Dream On’ to getting to see that guy on this seasons’ America’s Got Talent do some amazing tricks with his dog at the Purina Dog Show…but, one of the greatest moments for me was at the start of the display, they played our national anthem and lit up the sky with some amazing fireworks…it was in that moment that I realized once again just how proud I am to be an American…man, what a country we live in…we are so fortunate and a BIG THANK YOU to all who serve and have served our nation in our military for allowing us the privilege to enjoy our freedom.

Blessed to be an American!

Jesse
